1-30-14 With hunting season in the books, it's time to focus on bass fishing. Although the water temps are running high 40's to low 50's the move towards the shallows for the prespawn is just around the corner. The larger females are holding in typical staging areas in 6 - 12 feet. Rattletraps and Squarebill Cranks in Bream, Shad or Crawfish colors are working over the top of the hydrilla. Moving out deeper, Carolina rigs and football jigs are catching some really nice sacks on ledges and drops in 15-25 feet. It should only take a few days of sun and warmer temps to trigger the bass to move to shallow spawning areas. For the shallow bite, target flooded bushes and shoreline grass with soft plastics, swimjigs, chatterbaits and spinnerbaits. Big Bite Jerk Minnows and 6 Inch Finnesse worms in watermelon and green pumpkin rigged weightless or with a small split shot rig will usually work well. On the moving baits, perch and white/chartreuse are the go to colors. The white bass run is in full swing up the Angelina River above Marions Ferry Park. White Roadrunners and Chrome ¼ ounce Rattle traps are good choices of baits. Start in deeper bends and chunk and wind till you find em.
