Bonds and Castledine Take the Win

The Annual 4th Of July Tournament presented by Daiwa saw 138 teams take advantage of the National Holiday and try their hand at winning a share of the $18,000 payout on Sam Rayburn. When the dust settled, the duo of Jason Bonds and Todd Castledine left with the $2,800 first place check for their 16.28 pound three fish stringer.

During summer tournaments, the scales open at 10:00 so any team can come weigh in a big bass and release it so it does not have to stress all day in their live well. Mark Lanham and Willie Martin took advantage of that opportunity, but instead of weighing just one fish, they already had three fish to weigh! Their stringer weighed an impressive 15.24 and held on for second place and $2,200. The third place team of Richie Thornton and Ryan Clendennen brought in enough weight to win second place, but the one pound penalty cost the team $400, and they won third place and $1,800. Rounding out the top four teams was the YouTuber himself, Ken Smith, and Steve Evans. Their day resulted in a stringer worth 15.05 pounds earning them $1,600.

The Rambo Outdoors Outlaw Of The Year standings were shook up after the points were tallied following the tournament. Going into the tournament, Clayton Boulware and Albert Collins led the points race over the second place team Tommy Hill and Bubba Frazier, but Boulware and Collins could not find a big bite and it cost them very valuable points. They slipped to third place in the overall standings while Hill and Frazier finished ninth moving to the number one position in the Rambo Outdoors Outlaw Of The Year standings with two tournaments remaining.

Bass are on points and drains in shallow water spawning, and some are in a post spawn biting crankbaits and Carolina rigs. Some topwater along the grass edges. Crappie are fair in the shallows near stumps and fair on the brush piles. Some crappie are spawning near cypress trees, wade anglers can target these. White bass are schooling on main lake points but not surfacing yet. Catch some with jigs, minnows, crankbaits and jigging spoons. Catfish are slowly moving back to the points. Report by Captain Lynn Atkinson, Reel Um N Guide Service. Shad spawn is in full swing. Bass are good keying on hard clay points, grass edges and flooded timber with swim jigs, chatterbaits, topwater spooks or pop-r’s. Offshore bite is 10-20 feet on hard spots and flats, points and creek channel swings using crankbaits, Carolina rigs, shaky heads and dropshots.
