The Broaddus High School team of Hunter Curry and Josh Russell brought a two-day total of 10 bass to the scale weighing 33 pounds, 10 ounces, to win the 2015 Texas State High School Fishing American Legion Sam Rayburn OPEN on Sam Rayburn Reservoir. The win qualified the team to compete in the High School Fishing Southern Conference championship on the Arkansas River in October.
“We used a combination of Yamamoto Senkos and Strike King Rage Craws up in the tree tops and brush to catch most of our fish,” said Curry, who will be a junior this coming year at Broaddus High School.
“We moved around quite a bit, but we had one spot that held most of our bigger fish,” added Russell. “This is my last High School Tournament and it feels good to go out with a win.”
Russell, who recently graduated from Broaddus High School, has enlisted and will leave to serve our country in the Military in a few weeks.
The top three teams on Sam Rayburn Reservoir that advanced to the Southern Conference Championship were:
1st: Broaddus High School – Hunter Curry and Josh Russell, 10 bass, 33-10
2nd: Colmesneil High School – Eli Dinger and Stephan Thomas, 10 bass, 30-11
3rd: David Thibodaux STEM Magnet Academy – Logan Chaney and Matthew Myers, nine bass, 28-2
Rounding out the top 10 teams were:
4th: Buna High School – Breeann Sparks and Derek Clark, 10 bass, 26-12
5th: Broaddus High School – Thomas Vardeman and Zaryon Price, 10 bass, 25-5
6th: Hudson High School – Hunter Kaemmerling and Andrew Morris, 10 bass, 25-4
7th: Carthage High School – Rhody Norris and Delane Bird, 10 bass, 25-0
8th: Jasper High School – Ty Morehead and Calvin Schofner, eight bass, 22-5
9th: Sanger High School – Jared Penton and Jackson Hall, 10 bass, 22-4
10th: Sanger High School – Joe Beebee and River Lee, 10 bass, 22-2

The 2015 Texas State High School Fishing American Legion Sam Rayburn OPEN was a two-person (team) event for students in grades 7-12. The top three teams from each of the seven TBF/FLW High School Fishing Opens held this season along with the top 10 percent from each TBF/FLW state championship field will advance to a High School Fishing conference championship. The top 10 percent of each conference championship field will then advance to the High School Fishing National Championship, coinciding with the TBF National Championship and an FLW Tour stop in the spring of 2016. The High School Fishing national champions will each receive a $5,000 college scholarship to the school of their choice.
In addition to the High School Fishing National Championship, all High School Fishing anglers nationwide automatically qualify for the world’s largest high school bass tournament, the 2015 High School Fishing World Finals, held on Pickwick Lake in Florence, Alabama, on July 8-11.
