The third qualifying tournament for the Deep East Texas High School Fishing Series took place on Saturday, December 17, 2016 at Jackson Hill Marina.
Student anglers braved rough waters and stiff competition from sixty one teams. Anglers Cory Hyden and Colton Haynes, members of the Pirate Bass Club, took first place. These two young men caught a limit of five fish, weighing a total of 21.72 lbs.
Second place was taken by members of the West Sabine Club, Hunter Muncrief and Landon McCary. This talented team brought in five fish with a total of 18.59 lbs. They also captured the prize for Big Bass, with a fish weighing 7.02 pounds.
Joseph Bruener and Hunter Curry of the Broaddus High School Fishing team captured third place, catching a limit of five fish weighing a total of 16.97 pounds. This tournament continues the tight competition between Broaddus and West Sabine and with four qualifiers remaining it is still a wide open race.
The student anglers of the Deep East Texas High School Fishing Series also helped raise enough money to send gifts to over 100 children in need from our local lake communities. Outdoor Freedom Network matched money given by tournament participants to insure that local children would not go without presents for Christmas.
The next Deep East Texas Qualifier is this weekend, January 7th. The entire schedule, tournament rules and regulations can be found at www.deepeasthighschoolfishing.com or calling 936-872-9266.
