Rodney Dotson and Larry Cotten Rat-L-Trap Champs

Outlaw Outdoors reports 210 teams showed up to fish the Rat-L-Trap Open Tournament this year on Sam Rayburn. The big fish seemed to really be eating. We had 5 fish over 8 pounds come across the stage, and saw lots of quality fish be weighed in. We also heard several reports of the new Bill Lewis MR-6 being the weapon of choice for getting the big fish to bite. It looks like the MR-6 is a new weapon that should definitely be added to your arsenal.

At the end of the day when the scales closed, the team of Rodney Dotson and Larry Cotten narrowly held onto the victory with their impressive limit topping the leader board at 21.19 lbs. Their days work earned them a cool $5,000!! Rodney reported catching all of their fish on two different color Rat-L-Traps. The red crawfish chartreuse belly 'trap and chrome red 'trap seemed to be the secret for Rodney and Larry.

Not far behind was the team of Colt Dear and Eric Williamson. That duo brought in a limit of 21.00 lbs and earned a $2500 payday. We had a split for 3rd and 4th place. The team of Aaron Freeman and Ben Matsubu and the team of Toby Tucker and Ricky Heard both brought in solid bags tipping the scales at 19.20 lbs. Each of those teams took home $1450 for their days work.

The duo of Aaron Freeman and Ben Matsubu also took home the big bass honors. They caught a 8.59 lb Rayburn giant that earned them another payday of $2500. Ben caught the big girl on a 1/2 oz Rayburn Red Zombie Rat-L-Trap. Second place big bass honors went to the team of Butch Harper and Gary Frick with their 8.44 lb bass. Butch and Gary took home $1640 for second place big bass.

Fishing Report from TPWD (Apr. 24)

GOOD. Water slightly stained; 70 degrees; 3.49 feet below pool. Navigate with caution to avoid sandbars and stumps. Bass are on points and drains in shallow water spawning, and some are in a post spawn biting crankbaits and Carolina rigs. Some topwater along the grass edges. Crappie are fair in the shallows near stumps and fair on the brush piles. Some crappie are spawning near cypress trees, wade anglers can target these. White bass are schooling on main lake points but not surfacing yet. Catch some with jigs, minnows, crankbaits and jigging spoons. Catfish are slowly moving back to the points. Report by Captain Lynn Atkinson, Reel Um N Guide Service. Shad spawn is in full swing. Bass are good keying on hard clay points, grass edges and flooded timber with swim jigs, chatterbaits, topwater spooks or pop-r’s. Offshore bite is 10-20 feet on hard spots and flats, points and creek channel swings using crankbaits, Carolina rigs, shaky heads and dropshots. Crappie have finished spawning in 12-20 feet of water on brush piles and standing timber. Report by Captain Hank Harrison, Double H Precision Fishing.
