Texas Fallen Heroes High School Fishing Championship Set for June 3rd - 5th




The American Legion is looking forward to hosting the fourth annual National High School Bass Fishing Tournament on Sam Rayburn Lake with a new name and purpose. The event will feature a patriotic program designed to celebrate Youth fishing in America and Honor the Heroes who have given us the Freedom to enjoy our great Natural resources.

The Bass Federation (TBF) operating the Student Anglers Federation will sanction the event to qualify student anglers for the SAF regional and National Championship series.

Roy James the Commander of Post 78 Jasper commented "Jasper and American Legion Posts 113 Lufkin and 197 Hemphill are all absolutely thrilled to be hosting the June 3-5, 2016 Bass Fishing Tournament. This gives us a great opportunity to bring high school anglers and their families from all over the South to experience our world class fishing and hospitality".

Terry Sympson founder of Outdoor Freedom Network is the event coordinator and Jackson Hill Marina is the site for the tournaments mandatory Friday afternoon meeting and free team cookout where each student angler will be presented a set of dog tags with the name of one of our Texas Fallen Heroes to wear during the tournament to honor them and all of our Texas Fallen Heroes. The Texas Fallen Heroes Memorial Wall will be on display for the weekend with the Saturday and Sunday weigh in set to take place at The Bill and Emily Shelton Pavilion at Cassells-Boykin Park located just a few miles from Jackson Hill.

Mandatory Check-in and Angler Cookout: The festivities will kick off with an angler team supper at the mandatory pre-tournament meeting to be held at Jackson Hill Marina. The teams will be treated to a meat and potato meal cooked by the Military Veteran Cooking Team "The Grill Instructors". Take Off and Weigh-in: Saturday and Sunday June 4th and 5th will be the official tournament days with takeoff being at first safe light at the Bill and Emily Shelton Pavilion at Cassels-Boykin Park. The weigh-in will be at 2:00pm.

Fishing Report from TPWD (Apr. 17)

GOOD. Water slightly stained; 70 degrees; 5.19 feet below pool. Navigate with caution to avoid sandbars and stumps. Bass are on points and drains in shallow water spawning, and some are in a post spawn biting crankbaits and Carolina rigs. Some topwater along the grass edges. Crappie are fair in the shallows near stumps and fair on the brush piles. Some crappie are spawning near cypress trees, wade anglers can target these. White bass are schooling on main lake points but not surfacing yet. Catch some with jigs, minnows, crankbaits and jigging spoons. Catfish are slowly moving back to the points. Bass are good keying on hard clay points, grass edges and flooded timber with swim jigs, chatterbaits, topwater spooks or pop-r’s. Offshore bite is 10-20 feet on hard spots and flats, points and creek channel swings using crankbaits, Carolina rigs, shaky heads and dropshots.
