Patriots Challenge ends 2014 with great fishing

T.Ss Goodwin and Philip Crelia topped the field at Saturdays final Patriots Challenge Weekend Series bass fishing tournament for 2014 with a big Santa sack of bass weighing 26.91 lbs including a 8.32 kicker to finish off the field of 20 teams in high style. The second place team of William Flournoy and Andrew Y'Barbo had a nice five fish limit weighing in at 18.48 lbs fishing with a Stanley Swim Jig. Third place was anchored by Trent Vardeman and Cole Stewart with a very respectable 17.82 lb sack including a nice 5.30 kicker.

The local favorites along with the rest of the teams focused on the hot winter lipless crank bait bite to anchor the majority of their fish. Almost every team brought in their five fish limit on a beautiful winter day on Sam Rayburn with mild temperatures and favorable winds.

Patriots Challenge will ring in the New Year on January 3rd and invites everyone to come out and fish for the fun, for the money and for the cause.

“The new year, 2015, will be the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War and we are proud to announce that Outdoor Freedom Network is a National Commemorative Partner and will recognize Vietnam Vets throughout the year with a very special event to be announced soon,” said Terry Sympson.

The Outdoor Freedom Network is a 501 (c) (3) public charity that operates the Patriots Challenge Fishing Tournament Series to help raise money to host military members past and present for free stays, food, guided fishing trips, rest and relaxation on Sam Rayburn Lake. All profit made at these weekend series tournaments directly benefit military members and their families.

GOOD. Water slightly stained; 70 degrees; 3.49 feet below pool. Navigate with caution to avoid sandbars and stumps. Bass are on points and drains in shallow water spawning, and some are in a post spawn biting crankbaits and Carolina rigs. Some topwater along the grass edges. Crappie are fair in the shallows near stumps and fair on the brush piles. Some crappie are spawning near cypress trees, wade anglers can target these. White bass are schooling on main lake points but not surfacing yet. Catch some with jigs, minnows, crankbaits and jigging spoons. Catfish are slowly moving back to the points. Report by Captain Lynn Atkinson, Reel Um N Guide Service. Shad spawn is in full swing.
