2016 Stanley Frog Fight won by West Sabine

The second annual Stanley's High School Frog Fight was held at Jackson Hill Marina on Saturday September 24th with 50 high school teams representing 20 separate high schools competing for this year's crown. Sponsored by Stanley/Hale Lures, Outdoor Freedom Network and Jackson Hill Marina the participants were allowed to only use Stanley/Hale baits on a near perfect early fall day that saw a good day long frog bite along with limits generated by Stanley Spinner Baits, Jigs and plastics flipping grass.

The veteran West Sabine Bass Club team of Hunter Muncrief and Landon McCary started the new season out pretty much how they ended last season, winning and producing a solid 17.57 lb limit.

Second place was won by a pair of newcomers from LCM high school. Eight graders Tyler Shearin and Kamryn Henderson proved once again that only the fish have size limits in high school bass fishing as the pair teamed up to catch 16.99 lbs.

Third place was won by another veteran team from Jasper High School, Hunter Martindale and Kaleb Barnett with 15.75 lbs.

The big bass of the day was a 5.67 lb beauty caught by Don Hutto and Mark Tucker from Woodville.

The top six was rounded out with Douglass Indians Jacob Bruener and Austin Brewer taking fourth with 15.05 lbs, Chase Webb and Caston Stott from Jasper took fifth with 14.97 lbs and Trent Andrus and Brady Harmon sixth with 14.18 lbs of Sam Rayburn gold.

Legendary Anglers and lure designers Lonnie Stanley and John Hale were both on hand to see how the student anglers would do with their collection of Rayburn tested baits including their new Poppin'Toad and Da Bug soft plastic flipping bait.

"Everyone had a great day on the lake" Lonnie commented, after spending my life in the fishing business it is so great to see so many kids coming out to enjoy the sport we love". High school fishing has become a giant sport in Texas as well as other states across the country and Sam Rayburn is hosting more student anglers in organized tournaments than any lake in America. Bass are on points and drains in shallow water spawning, and some are in a post spawn biting crankbaits and Carolina rigs. Some topwater along the grass edges. Crappie are fair in the shallows near stumps and fair on the brush piles. Some crappie are spawning near cypress trees, wade anglers can target these.
