Sanderson and Addison Win Patriots Challenge

Tough winter conditions took its toll on the Patriots Challenge competitors on Saturday January 9th. Five fish limits became increasingly hard to come by after a strong cold front blew in shortly after takeoff. When it all ended, the team of Clarence Sanderson and Bobby Addison bested the field. The pair managed to catch five fish with a total weight of 15.18 lbs.

In second place was the team of Jody Norsworthy and John Scott who managed to land 14.90 lbs including the big bass at 4.14 lbs.

Third place went to Dale Gore and John Scarborough with 11.42 lbs.

Fish were caught with Rattletraps, however the best and most consistent fish of the day were caught a little deeper with Texas and Carolina rigged plastics.

The next Challenge will be on February 20th with bass moving up in increasing numbers to begin the annual spring spawn. We are predicting year for numbers and giants.

Patriots Challenge was created to say thank you to the people who have given us the freedom to enjoy wonderful natural resources like Sam Rayburn Lake.

This years’ first Wounded Warrior event will be on March 18-20. We need volunteer boaters for this event. Patriots Challenge will also continue the Commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War. Outdoor Freedom Network will continue to recognize Vietnam Vets throughout the year.

Patriots Challenge welcomes everyone to come out to join them to fish for the fun, fish for the money and fish for the cause. "We have a special thank you that we would like to give to every Vietnam Veteran that comes to Jackson Hill whether you fish or not" said Connie Sympson of Jackson Hill Marina.

The Outdoor Freedom Network is a 501 (c) (3) public charity that operates the Patriots Challenge Fishing Tournament Series to help raise money to host military members past and present for free stays, food, guided fishing trips, rest and relaxation on beautiful Sam Rayburn Lake. All profit made at these weekend series tournaments directly benefit military members and their families.

Fishing Report from TPWD (Apr. 24)

GOOD. Water slightly stained; 70 degrees; 3.49 feet below pool. Navigate with caution to avoid sandbars and stumps. Bass are on points and drains in shallow water spawning, and some are in a post spawn biting crankbaits and Carolina rigs. Some topwater along the grass edges. Crappie are fair in the shallows near stumps and fair on the brush piles. Some crappie are spawning near cypress trees, wade anglers can target these. White bass are schooling on main lake points but not surfacing yet. Catch some with jigs, minnows, crankbaits and jigging spoons. Catfish are slowly moving back to the points. Report by Captain Lynn Atkinson, Reel Um N Guide Service. Shad spawn is in full swing. Bass are good keying on hard clay points, grass edges and flooded timber with swim jigs, chatterbaits, topwater spooks or pop-r’s. Offshore bite is 10-20 feet on hard spots and flats, points and creek channel swings using crankbaits, Carolina rigs, shaky heads and dropshots. Crappie have finished spawning in 12-20 feet of water on brush piles and standing timber. Report by Captain Hank Harrison, Double H Precision Fishing.
