Rayburn Oilmen’s Classic presents a $30,000 check to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital




“The 18th Annual Rayburn Oilmen’s Classic, October 10-11, 2014 was a huge success,” said Charlie Parks, President of the Rayburn Oilmen’s Classic. Four sacks topped the 30 lb. mark for the two day event with Joe Buckner and Cody Simmons achieving top weight. The tournament had a full field of 200 boats.

Jason Shropshire and Joseph Goodrum brought in the biggest sack of the tournament on day one with 20.95 lbs.

John Bevans caught the Big Bass of the tournament at 9.81 lbs.. Mitch Shofflett fishing with Cory Forestier, weighed a 9.09 lbs. bass.

Competitors found it a little tougher the second day of competition. The initial leader board shuffled substantially.

Joe Buckner and Cody Simmons added another 15.24 lbs. to their total weight, vaulting them from fourth place on day one to win the tournament with 33.88 lbs. Buckner gave Simmons all the credit. “Cody found our fish.” They reported catching their fish north of the 147 bridge while using white Strike King Wave Baits on both days of the tournament.

Second place winners Christopher Aston and Brent Boquet also had a great comeback from their fifth place on day one. Their two day total was 30.82 lbs. Len Adcock and Jeff Holder rose from eighth place on day one to third place with a 30.34 lbs total.

Rounding out the top 10 were:
4th – Bobby Hebert and Calvin Gambino…30.27 lbs
5th – Jason Shropshire and Joseph Goodrum…29.94 lbs
6th – Brad Beridon and Craig Marsh…28.65 lbs.
7th – David Matheny and Kenny Babin…28.33 lbs.
8th – Don Rodney and Irvin Bourgeois, Jr….27.74 lbs.
9th – Monte Nevils and Bill Pippen…27.64 lbs.
10th – John Bevans and Belinda Marus…27.62 lbs.

“The big check, ($30,000) and the reason as well as motivation for everyone involved to put this tournament on, was given to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital,” said Parks. The Wounded Warriors Project also received a check for $3,000.00.

Fishing Report from TPWD (Apr. 24)

GOOD. Water slightly stained; 70 degrees; 3.49 feet below pool. Navigate with caution to avoid sandbars and stumps. Bass are on points and drains in shallow water spawning, and some are in a post spawn biting crankbaits and Carolina rigs. Some topwater along the grass edges. Crappie are fair in the shallows near stumps and fair on the brush piles. Some crappie are spawning near cypress trees, wade anglers can target these. White bass are schooling on main lake points but not surfacing yet. Catch some with jigs, minnows, crankbaits and jigging spoons. Catfish are slowly moving back to the points. Bass are good keying on hard clay points, grass edges and flooded timber with swim jigs, chatterbaits, topwater spooks or pop-r’s. Offshore bite is 10-20 feet on hard spots and flats, points and creek channel swings using crankbaits, Carolina rigs, shaky heads and dropshots.
