Sam Rayburn April report

4/10/2013 Water level 2 feet low, 65 degrees, clear to lightly stained. Bass are moving back and forth into spawning areas, but the majority of the spawn has wrapped for the year. You can still find some small buck bass on beds, but the larger females are headed out to the mid depths to recuperate. We've been having the beast luck on larger fish targeting hydrilla beds and offshore stumpy points in 6-15 feet. For the grass bite, use fluke style baits, wacky worms and Senkos with either no weight, or a small split shot placed about 10 inches up the line. For the stumpy points, short, light Carolina rigs with a lizard or baby brush hog are working well. Any shade of watermelon will work in both situations. Be aware as the water continues to warm, the larger fish will move back towards the shoreline and start chasing shad. Topwaters, frogs and weightless Flukes will really start to shine in the next few weeks. Focus on the massive amounts of flooded hay grass that seems to be in almost all areas of the lake. The bass will use this grass to hide and ambush bait. Crappie season has kicked off and the grass bite is consistent. Roadrunners and jigs will both work. We will be sitting over brushpiles starting the first week of May. I have most of May and June booked but I still have quite a few dates open in July. Call or email me if you would like to get a group out on the pontoon for some catching. Set the Hook Hard. www.RogerBaconOutdoors.com
