Golf for a Good Cause!

Lufkin...Golf and giving. In Brookshire Brothers' world, the two go hand and hand. The Lufkin-based grocery chain holds two charity golf tournaments each year. The proceeds go into the company's Charitable Foundation. On Monday, Brookshire Brothers' vendors from across the country will converge on Lufkin for the first of its series of charity golf tournaments. Representatives from companies like Kraft, General Mills, Community Coffee and Value Merchandisers will tee it up for a good cause. Teams pay from $2000-3500 in entry fees for the privilege of playing in Monday's tournament, knowing the money raised is returned to nonprofits in Brookshire Brothers' market area in Texas and Louisiana. In February, Brookshire Brothers gave checks totaling nearly $100,000 to seven non profits including the American Cancer Society, Friends of the Ellen Trout Zoo, Harold's House - the East Texas Alliance for Children, Boys and Girls Club of Deep East Texas, Alzheimer's Association's Houston/Southeast Texas and Capitol of Texas chapters, Volunteer Services Council of the Lufkin State Supported Living Center and the Angelina Arts Alliance. The 501 (c) 3 organization was established specifically to receive the funds from the tournaments which are held in May and September each year. This year 68 teams, 75% of them from out of the region, will play in two separate tournaments on Monday. As the first 34 teams get off the course around lunchtime, the next group of 34 teams will tee off. One vendor says, "My colleagues and I look forward to playing the Brookshire Brothers tourney each year. It's well-organized, professionally run, on a great course and we know we are supporting charities Brookshire Brothers cares deeply about. It makes good sense to us to participate." Brookshire Brothers is an employee-owned grocery chain operating 74 stores throughout Texas and western Louisiana.

Fishing Report from TPWD (Jan. 19)

GOOD. Water stained; 55-58 degrees; 3.33 feet low. Fishing remains the same as we head into another cold front. Bass are good on Carolina rigs and crankbaits in the points, ditches and drains. Crappie are good on live minnows, then jigs after the live bite subsides. You will find them in creeks and river channels. Catfish are good in shallow to 15 feet of water, moving towards the creeks. Report by Lynn Atkinson, Reel Um N Guide Service.
