Berryman and Picket win fourth High School Qualifier

The fourth Deep East Texas High School Fishing Series qualifying tournament took place on Saturday January 2nd at Jackson Hill Marina. Student Anglers Braden Berryman and Cory Hyden from The Kirbyville Bassmasters out fished 34 other high school fishing teams to keep them in contention for The Deep East Texas Anglers of the Year.

The veteran team nailed down the victory with an impressive 17.97 lbs of Rayburn Green Gold including an 8.36 lb kicker to complete a good day of fishing in spite of the cold front and windy winter conditions.

The second place team of Robby Clark and Cory Hyden from the Pirate Bass Club came close with a 17.51 lb limit of fish.

Third place went to the Broaddus Bulldog team of Hunter Curry and Randy Morgan with 15.54 lbs.

The weather word was winter as a cold front came in along with a chilly wind. The top fourteen teams all managed to catch their five fish limit with only a few teams not weighing in any fish. The bite was all over the place from 2 ft shallow to 30 ft using Carolina Rigged plastics. A few teams reported having a spinner bait bite just ahead of the front.

The next Deep East Texas Qualifier will be held on February 13th and looks to be a sweet weekend with some of the prettiest girls moving up to start the 2016 spawn; Happy Valentine's Day everybody. Fishing Report from TPWD (May 1)

GOOD. Water stained; 72 degrees; 3.29 feet below pool. Bass are in 8 feet or less with some in the lily pads on topwater frogs, or with Carolina rigs and jigs on harder bottoms and structures off points and humps. Crappie are transitioning to brush piles using minnows and jigs. Catfish are in deeper water flats and creek channels on cut bait. White bass are transitioning to points and down the river with some schooling activity hitting jigging spoons and crankbaits. Fishing patterns are still behind what is typical for this time of year. Navigate with caution to avoid sandbars and stumps. Report by Captain Lynn Atkinson, Reel Um N Guide Service. Shad spawn is in full swing. Bass are good keying on hard clay points, grass edges and flooded timber with swim jigs, chatterbaits, topwater spooks or pop-r’s. Offshore bite is 10-20 feet on hard spots and flats, points and creek channel swings using crankbaits, Carolina rigs, shaky heads and dropshots. Crappie have finished spawning in 12-20 feet of water on brush piles and standing timber. Report by Captain Hank Harrison, Double H Precision Fishing.
