Brown Brothers Win DETX Fifth Qualifier Muncrief and McCary are Sweet Six Champions

The February DETX high school fishing series qualifier and Sweet Six Championship took place at Jackson Hill Marina on February 18th. The Liberty Panther fishing team of Bailey and Bryley Brown topped the field with 20.92 lbs including the big fish of the day a nice 6.07 green girl to out distance the second place Kingwood Park team of Jace Russell and Jake Hall who landed 14.93 lbs including their own 5.85 lb kicker.

The pair stuck with crank baits from start to finish to earn their championship qualifying position and put them back into the running for DETX "Team of the Year". Third place went to West Sabine's dynamic duo Hunter Muncrief and Landon McCary who managed to pickup 14.04 lbs on a day that saw the entire field catching limits or near limits as the spring spawn gets under way. Fourth place was anchored by the consistent performers from Broaddus High School Hunter Curry and Joseph Bruener with 12.69 lbs. The tournament also saw the top six leading points teams through the January tournament compete for recognition as the Sweet Six Champions.

The team of Muncrief and McCary edged out Curry and Bruener to take this year's sweet six and maintain their lead in the "Team of the Year" race with only two qualifiers left before the May DETX Championship.

The Sweet Six teams and their boat captains were treated to a Rib Eye Steak dinner in their honor on Friday night with three LBAA pro anglers in attendance to talk about the importance of education and the opportunities for high school anglers to compete while getting their College degrees. The emphasis was on the "and " when it comes to pro fishing. Student anglers were encouraged to understand that most successful anglers have an "and" before the title of bass pro. Robby Hartline is retired Military and a lady bass pro, others were veteran law enforcement professionals and pro bass anglers. "The importance of education has never been more critical for our young anglers. Any parent or student angler that thinks they are going to fish their way to fame and fortune needs to rethink their plan and include an education.

The next DETX will be held on March 18th and include a weigh in with the LBAA Ladies Bass Tour that will be held the same weekend at Jackson Hill Marina. Fishing Report from TPWD (Jul. 30)

SLOW. Water stained; 90 degrees; 5.3 feet below pool. The water is low with large stumps exposed and fish moving back to deeper water. Conditions are changing quickly with bass moving to points, humps and offshore structure due to water releases. Carolina rigs and big baits are working for the deep bite. There's some topwater action in the shallows early in places, but fishing is mainly focused on deep structure. With all the water being released, the bite has been challenging. Bluegill are abundant on brush piles. Crappie are fair. Catfish are good in creek channels and off points. Lots of freshwater is still coming in from recent rains, but heavy water releases are making fishing difficult. Report by Captain Lynn Atkinson, Reel Um N Guide Service.
