Deep East Texas High School Fishing Series Names Sweet Six

The Deep East High School Fishing Series hosted a special event, the Valentine's Day Bassacre, to name their "Sweet Six" fishing teams. "The tournament marked the end of the fall and winter fishing season. We wanted to do something special for our leading teams to get ready for the TBF Texas State Championship, March 19th on Big Sam" said Connie Sympson of Jackson Hill Marina.

The Sweet Six were invited to a dinner at Jackson Hill with special guest and Hall of Fame bass Angler Tommy Martin who talked to the student anglers about how to prepare for a major tournament, the strategies and tactics needed to win in today's ultra competitive bass fishing environment.

The Sweet Six consisted of Spurger Pirate team mates Cory Hyden and Roby Clark, Kirbyville's Braden Berryman and Kenneth Picket, Broaddus High School's Hunter Curry and Randy Morgan, LCM's Justin Lee and Hunter Fant, Hudson High Schools Colten Nick and Justin Cook and Woodville's Steven Thomas and Dawson Wainwright

The teams and their boat Captains were provided overnight lodging and breakfast Saturday morning before competing to see who could be the Top Team of the Top Six. When the smoke cleared it was Stephen Thomas who caught the day’s big fish, a 8.24 lb beauty that helped his team bring in 18.03 lbs to win against their top rivals.

The Deep East Series will help host the March 5th Jim Brockman Open Individual High School Championship and will have two remaining qualifying tournaments before their Championship to be held on May 7th and 8th.

GOOD. Water slightly stained; 70 degrees; 3.49 feet below pool. Navigate with caution to avoid sandbars and stumps. Bass are on points and drains in shallow water spawning, and some are in a post spawn biting crankbaits and Carolina rigs. Some topwater along the grass edges. Crappie are fair in the shallows near stumps and fair on the brush piles. Some crappie are spawning near cypress trees, wade anglers can target these. White bass are schooling on main lake points but not surfacing yet. Catch some with jigs, minnows, crankbaits and jigging spoons. Catfish are slowly moving back to the points. Report by Captain Lynn Atkinson, Reel Um N Guide Service. Shad spawn is in full swing. Bass are good keying on hard clay points, grass edges and flooded timber with swim jigs, chatterbaits, topwater spooks or pop-r’s. Offshore bite is 10-20 feet on hard spots and flats, points and creek channel swings using crankbaits, Carolina rigs, shaky heads and dropshots. Crappie have finished spawning in 12-20 feet of water on brush piles and standing timber. Report by Captain Hank Harrison, Double H Precision Fishing.
