Jake Patillo and Randall Patrick Win Deep East High School Tournament

The Colmesneil Bulldog fishing team has continued to keep the pressure on their competition with a big win in the Deep East Texas High School Fishing Series on March 28th. Fishing was tough with water higher than most can remember and fish able to go deep inside the thick stuff to complete their annual spring spawn.

The student anglers threw everything at them trying to figure out the right combination to get their limit of bass. In the end it was a little of everything that seemed to work for some while most of the teams struggled to come up with a limit of fish. Everything from spinner baits and swim baits to flipping jigs and Texas rigged plastics in the bushes produced a few good fish.

Randall Patrick and Jake Patillo had one of the few limits and managed the win with 13.35 lbs of fish. Thomas Vardeman continued to impress the field with another solid performance managing to catch his limit of 12.29 lbs fishing alone because of his partner's baseball schedule.

Cam Carter and Logan Thumann also stayed in championship contention with 10.83 lbs for third place including the day’s big fish, a 7.11 lb beauty caught by Logan. Fourth place went to Lane Vinson and Jake Eason from the GSF Hornets. Fifth place was anchored by Michael Snook and Evan Champagne from Summer Creek High School. The casting contest was won by Lane Vinson who beat his competitors with one leg in a cast to win an American Hero combo rod and reel.

The Deep East High School Fishing Series path of Champions include 6 more qualifying opportunities over 10 days in the month of May to qualify for the B.A.S.S. National Championship as well as 3 more opportunities to qualify for the June 27th and 28th Deep East Texas overall Championship to be held in conjunction with the SAF American Legion National High School Qualifier.

"This is designed to allow student anglers to better manage their busy schedules and still have a chance to qualify for the Deep east Title and the two most prestigious National Championships held by B.A.S.S. and FLW/SAF" explained Terry Sympson Series Director. "The student anglers wanting to qualify for the B.A.S.S. championship can pick their fishing days every weekend in May, Saturday or Sunday, but not both'” he added. To qualify for the B.A.S.S. National Championship each student angler must also be a B.A.S.S. National and Texas State member. www.texasbass.org/highschool.

To qualify for the SAF American Legion National High School Qualifier each angler must be a member of the SAF, www.highschoolfishing.org. The Deep East Series will also be giving educational awards and fishing prize packages to the student anglers. Fishing Report from TPWD (May 1)

GOOD. Water stained; 72 degrees; 3.29 feet below pool. Bass are in 8 feet or less with some in the lily pads on topwater frogs, or with Carolina rigs and jigs on harder bottoms and structures off points and humps. Crappie are transitioning to brush piles using minnows and jigs. Catfish are in deeper water flats and creek channels on cut bait. White bass are transitioning to points and down the river with some schooling activity hitting jigging spoons and crankbaits. Fishing patterns are still behind what is typical for this time of year. Navigate with caution to avoid sandbars and stumps. Report by Captain Lynn Atkinson, Reel Um N Guide Service. Shad spawn is in full swing. Bass are good keying on hard clay points, grass edges and flooded timber with swim jigs, chatterbaits, topwater spooks or pop-r’s. Offshore bite is 10-20 feet on hard spots and flats, points and creek channel swings using crankbaits, Carolina rigs, shaky heads and dropshots. Crappie have finished spawning in 12-20 feet of water on brush piles and standing timber. Report by Captain Hank Harrison, Double H Precision Fishing.
