Magnolia West Anglers wins Deep East Fifth Qualifier

The fifth Deep East Texas High School Fishing Series qualifying tournament took place on Saturday February 13th at Jackson Hill Marina. Student Anglers Aaron Batten and Logan Thumann from the Magnolia West Bass Fishing Club took on 43 other high school fishing teams and outlasted the field with a five fish limit weighing 14.66 lbs. The veteran student anglers have been very competitive over the last two years and are the 2015 Fishers of Men National High School Champions.

Second place went to the Douglass Indian team of Jacob Bruener and Austin Brewer with a 13.52 lbs limit. The Colmesneil lady team of Mia Spardlin and Shelby Patrick took third place honors and have worked hard to improve their fishing skills every outing.

The recent cold front slowed the bite down and provided challenging conditions for the young anglers. More than half of the teams still managed to catch their limit of fish with everything from the usual plastics to lipless crank baits. A spinner bait bite was reported by a few of the teams.

Big fish were hard to come by with the Hudson high school team of Trinty Mitchell and Mason White netting a 5.27 lb fish to take big fish honors.

Fishing Report from TPWD (Apr. 30)

GOOD. Water stained; 73 degrees; 0.06 feet above pool. Many bass are still shallow trying to spawn, but this should finish this week. The best bite continues to be in 8-14 feet on ledges, humps and old timber with a big worm on a Texas rig or Carolina rig. Crappie and catfish are moving shallow and deep as they spawn. The magic depth has been 4-12 feet with minnows under corks and around trees on the bedding fish. Some crappie are moving to brush but the bite is not steady yet. Report by Captain Lynn Atkinson, Reel Um N Guide Service.
