Eight area teams participated in the Texas High School Bass Association State championship at Lake Sam Rayburn May 19-20.

The Whitehouse team of Trent Bookman and Elijah Focht led the area anglers in the tournament. The duo finished 35th with a total catch of 10 bass that weighed in at 28.15 pounds. The pair helped lead Whitehouse to a 10th place finish in the team standings.

Troup’s Rowdy Howell and Walker Adams hooked nine bass that tipped the scales at 26.56 pounds for 51st place. They led Troup to a 66th place finish in the team standings.

Derek Cheatham and Weston Sanford led Arp to 37th place in the team standings. The pair netted eight fish for a total weight of 26.71 pounds and 57th place.

Jason Wise and Paul Wood contributed to the Whitehouse team standings with a catch of 10 fish that weighed in at 25.53 pounds and 60th place.

Placing 61st was the duo of Logan Thompson and Noah Clark, who hauled in 10 bass for a total weight of 25.49 pounds.

Whitehouse’s Austin Davis and Justin Rasco placed 101st with a catch of 22.49 pounds; Brandon Burrow and Gage Dowdle had a catch of 16.42 pounds; Trey Enright and Coby Dunn hauled in a catch of 14.26 pounds.
Dutch Whitt and Ben VanWinkle of Arp hooked a catch that weighed in at 20.26 pounds.

The THSBA Angler of the Year will invite the Top Five Anglers of the Year in Each Division to a tournament Saturday, June 30, at Lake Tyler. Anglers must RSVP by Friday, June 8.

Fishing Report from TPWD (May 1)

GOOD. Water stained; 72 degrees; 3.29 feet below pool. Bass are in 8 feet or less with some in the lily pads on topwater frogs, or with Carolina rigs and jigs on harder bottoms and structures off points and humps. Crappie are transitioning to brush piles using minnows and jigs. Catfish are in deeper water flats and creek channels on cut bait. White bass are transitioning to points and down the river with some schooling activity hitting jigging spoons and crankbaits. Fishing patterns are still behind what is typical for this time of year. Bass are good keying on hard clay points, grass edges and flooded timber with swim jigs, chatterbaits, topwater spooks or pop-r’s. Offshore bite is 10-20 feet on hard spots and flats, points and creek channel swings using crankbaits, Carolina rigs, shaky heads and dropshots.
