White bass are in the river and feeder creeks

Reports are coming in that the first waves of white bass are beginning to move up the creeks and rivers that feed Lake Sam Rayburn on their annual spawning run.

White bass are cold-tolerant fish that spawn when water temperature is between 50-55 degrees. You can catch one fish right after another when you locate a school of them.

Almost any small shad imitation lure will draw strikes, but 1/8 or 1/4 ounce Road Runner jigs and 1/4 ounce Rat-L-Traps are the preferred lures.

Locating schools in the river is dependent on river height and clarity. If the river is low and clarity decent, the fish will hold in the main channel; if the river is up and muddy, the white bass tend to move into feeder creeks where water clarity is often better.

Action should continue through mid-March.

Fishing Report from TPWD (May 7)

GOOD. Water stained; 73 degrees; 0.90 feet above pool. Many bass are still shallow trying to spawn, but this should finish this week. The best bite continues to be in 8-14 feet on ledges, humps and old timber with a big worm on a Texas rig or Carolina rig. Crappie and catfish are moving shallow and deep as they spawn. The magic depth has been 4-12 feet with minnows under corks and around trees on the bedding fish. Some crappie are moving to brush but the bite is not steady yet. Report by Captain Lynn Atkinson, Reel Um N Guide Service.
